Day 10--Conference and Town Tour

I was at the conference all day today--it was really worthwhile.  There were many good research presentations and I connected with some old friends.

On the path up to the university there is an outdoor glass bookshelf.  I thought it was a great way to signify a place of learning.

The conference organizers gave us an hour and a half lunch.  I met a new colleague from Mexico and we took a walk along the canal that borders the university during lunch.

At the end of the day, a guided tour of old town Klagenfurt was arranged for the conference participants.  We had a very well informed guide who was a historian.  It was so interesting.

I found out the umbrellas are basically advertisements for the stores.  Each umbrella has the logo of one of the businesses below it.

So much for some cool art installation.

We saw holocaust memorials in Vienna and Bratislava, but the smallest and maybe most impressive so far is here in Klagenfurt.  In front of the doors of the homes or businesses of Jews who were killed is a small golden paver with the person's name and a bit about them.

These are around the city and seem to be a much more powerful and personal connection to those that perished.
